About Bunions (HAV)

A bunion, or hallux valgus, is a deformity of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint in the foot. The big toe (hallux) deviates laterally (towards the second toe), while the first metatarsal bone deviates medially (towards the midline of the body), producing a bony prominence at the medial side of the MTPJ (“the bump”).

While more females experience this condition it due to genetic factors, environmental factors like tight narrow shoes or high heels can accelerate and worsen of the condition.

Early education and intervention on management on condition is important to prevent the worsening of the condition.

Risk Factors of Bunions (HAV)

There are multiple stages in the presentation in the development of bunions.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Redness, pain, or soreness around the big toe joint that worsens with prolonged walking and weight bearing
  • Instability of the 1st toe joint (big toe)
  • Blistering, or corns and callus build up around toe 1st toe joint
  • In severe late stage cases, toes overlapping or riding under toes, a deformed alignment.

Family history or genetics

Environmental factors: tight, narrow footwear or high heels

Hyperlaxity of ligaments and muscles

Inflammatory conditions: conditions like Rheumatoid arthritis may also contribute to a development of HAV

Goal

Relieve foot discomfort and enhance overall foot health

1

In-depth Assessment

An in-depth assessment of your body structure and the factors that might be contributing to HAV as well as the severity of it via staging. A video assessment of your dynamic gait to observe other contributing factors.
2

Footwear Advisory

Consideration of the right footwear to help support your feet, absorb shock and reduce the overall load and stress through the heel and foot. We advise based on your individual activity to fit your lifestyle and working needs.
3

Custom Orthotics

General orthotics or custom orthotics prescribed to contour to your feet can further alleviate foot pains and increase the overall re-distribution of the stress from the feet. Orthotic therapy does not solve the progression but only aims to slow the worsening of HAV if clients are opting for conventional methods.
4

Therapeutic Exercise Programme

Strengthening exercises to activate the plantar arch to prevent the worsening of the HAV
5

Sharps Debridement of Callus/Corns

Removal of corns and callus at our session with the podiatrist to alleviate the pain.
6

Self Management of Callus/Corns

Regular self filing of callus and corns with a nail or foot file to thin it out to reduce pains and discomfort.
