About Pes Planus

Pes planus (flatfoot) refers to the condition where the medial longitudinal arch of the foot is lower than normal, so that when weight is borne the arch collapses or is significantly reduced. The sole may contact or nearly contact the ground. The arch complex includes ligaments, tendons, fascia, and bony structure.

There are a few types of Pes planus:

Flexible flatfoot — the arch is present (or partially) when non-weight bearing, but flattens with weight-bearing. Often asymptomatic, especially in children or young adults.

Rigid flatfoot — the arch does not reconstitute when non-weight bearing; may involve bony deformities or stiff joints.

Adult-Acquired Flatfoot Deformity (AAFD) — occurs in adults over time, often due to failure/degradation of tendons and ligaments (notably posterior tibial tendon), often progressive. It’s sometimes also called posterior tibial tendon insufficiency deformity.

Flat feet does not usually cause pain, but if you are experiencing them, it would be best to drop by for an assessment to ensure that it is managed well.

Common Symtoms of Pes Planus

There are usually no symptoms of pain from flat feet. Individuals who sometimes experience pain from their feet and ankles are usually conditions associated with flat feet which will warrant treatment.
