Morton’s neuroma, also known as interdigital neuroma, is a perineural fibrosis and thickening of the common digital nerve, most often between the 3rd and 4th metatarsal heads (less commonly between 2nd and 3rd).
Despite its name, it’s not a true neoplasm — rather, it’s a reactive neuropathy resulting from chronic compression and irritation of the nerve in the intermetatarsal space.
Patients typically describe sharp, burning, or tingling pain radiating into the toes, often worsened by walking in tight or high-heeled shoes. Removing footwear or massaging the foot often brings temporary relief.
