About Foot Warts

Plantar warts (also called verrucae pedis) are benign epithelial proliferations of the skin caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection

They appear as rough, hard lumps that interrupt skin lines and may show tiny black dots. Pain is felt when the wart is squeezed from the sides.

Risk Factors of Foot Warts

Cause: The HPV virus infects basal keratinocytes of the epidermis through microabrasions in the skin.

Once inside, HPV DNA integrates into host cells, promoting cell proliferation and delayed apoptosis, leading to thickened, papillomatous skin lesions.

Persistent lesions common in adults or immunocompromised patients.

Recurrence rate after treatment: 10–30%.

People who have weakened immune systems

Walking barefoot in common shared areas like swimming pools, locker rooms, shared common shower areas where the HPV strain might be present
